Campaign Chunk Volume 12.08 – Armadillo

The Armadillo is a naturally armored mammal. Its name in Spanish means “little-armored one.” There are 21 species of Armadillo currently known. They range in size from the smallest , the pink fairy armadillo being about 6 inches/15 cm all the way up to the appropriately named Giant Armadillo which can measure in at 5 feet/1.5 meters. They can almost exclusively be found in the equatorial regions of Central and Southern America. The main exception is the nine-banded armadillo which has a habitat range that goes from Argentina to the southern United States.

The Armadillo is not a social creature and they do tend to spend most of their day sleeping and resting, usually up to 16 hours a day. However, when cold weather sets in they are known to share burrows and body heat. When awake, which is typical during the morning and evenings, they forage for food. Their diet consists of grubs, worms insects etc, but being omnivores they can also eat plants as well.

The gestation period of the armadillo lasts for anywhere from 2 to 6 months and when they do give birth it will be from 1 to 12 “pups” in a burrow. These pups can mature quite quickly and by the time they 9+ months old, they are ready to have their own offspring. As the armadillo can range in maximum age from 4 to 30 years. These details are different for each species of ‘Dillo.

Hooks & Rumours

  • During an archeological dig in Northern Hungary, evidence was found that showed what can best be described as an armadillo graveyard, with what is believed to be several thousand armadillo skeletons in a mass grave. This grave is believed to be several hundred years old.
  • It has been discovered that certain species of armadillos have a curious property about their shell armor. Rumors say that when ground up and mixed with another unnamed chemical it produces a chemical that can help remove addictions to other drugs. Sadly this process kills the armadillo and it has to be done when they are very young. This information is being investigated.
  • A farmer in Central America has an issue with a large group of Armadillos eating her crops and livelihood. What is unusual is that apart from their numbers, which are growing each year, is that the vast majority of the local farms are untouched, only hers are being damaged.
  • A new species of armadillo has been discovered with what appears to be multi-coloured armored plating. In many ways, it resembles the nine-banded armadillo, but with various patterns of scales. It looks like each individual member of this new species has their own unique pattern. An argument has broken out as to who discovered it first and gets the naming rights.
