Campaign Chunk Volume 13.06 The Red Tide

Red tide is a common name for a phenomenon known as an algal bloom, with some versions beeing classified as harmful algal blooms or HABs. An algal bloom is a rapid growth of microscopic algae water, often resulting in a coloured scum on the surface. The algae accumulate rapidly in the water column, resulting in coloration of the surface water. It is usually found in coastal areas.

The algae is rapidly absorbed by shellfish and is extremely neurotoxic. The highly lethal bloom may rapidly paralysis limbs, and even worse, it anesthetizes the respiratory pathways upon exposure through contaminated shellfish.

The Red Tide is considered to be the basis of the Biblical Plague where the waters turned to blood and was noted to have caused the death of one of Captain George Vancouver’s crew upon the navigation of Western Canada.

Hooks & Rumours

  • A type of algal bloom has been spotted in which the redness is very bright, almost glowing in fact. It apparently only lasts for a few hours so attempting to track down this elusive bloom has proved unfruitful. A large reward has been offered for positive proof or a viable sample of this algae.
  • Samples of a highly toxic version of the Red Tide Algae were offered up for sale on a popular online auction site. The purchaser, who happened to be a specialist who studied the Red tide paid for the items out of a curiosity. It turned out the sample was one of the most toxic they had ever seen and they are now alerting all who came into contact with the parcel, whilst trying to find out where it was harvested from.
  • Mistaking a harmless algae bloom for the Red Tide, a beach was closed. When it was discovered that the beach was closed for “no reason” the beach managers started a lawsuit against the advisors for lost income. The advisors are trying to raise funds to help their case whilst making a short information film to show just why it was a good idea to close the beac
  • A new terrorist group has recently been formed and has called themselves “The Red Tide”. This is causing confusion among the general population as some are wondering why task force and special ops are going up against an algal bloom.
