A Chunk of SciFi – 2.10 – Wild Space [Location]

“Wild Space? Yeah, I’ve been there. Well, been close to it, never across the border. It’s a weird bit of the universe. Like someone took the rules of nature and decided they would be, well not guidelines, but more like suggestions…”

Wild Space is the common name given to sector EGH-37. It goes by other names; Fractal Space, Choas Zone, Satans Eye and much more. Every spacefaring culture has encountered it or decides to try and explore it. Many do not return. Within this zone, the rules of reality hare mere suggestions. Time and space are bent, looped and twisted. A probe passing through the sector in 5 seconds might record several thousand years of data and come out the other side broken and in need of repair...

A Chunk of Fantasy 2.10 – High Sun [Holiday]

A Chunk of Fantasy 2.10 – High Sun

“Praise the sun? You actually think that is what we do? We worship what it gives us, what it represents – life, warmth and protection from the horrors of the night. I have heard there are many gods who dwell within it and why would we want to upset all of them? So no, we don’t “Worship” the sun any more than you worship the blacksmith that made the sword on your belt. But we do celebrate it!”

High Sun is the name given to a collection of holidays around the world that all take place on the same day when the sun reaches it’s highest point at noon, marking the longest day of the year for many people and cultures. It goes by many names, such as the Summer Solstice, the Longest Day or Midsummers Day...

A Chunk of SciFi – 2.09 – Singularity Rider

“We still don’t understand why this particular one works and the others don’t. If we can crack that mystery, it’ could be one of the biggest breakthroughs in the history of the universe”
– Excerpt from the report regarding the Singularity Rider.

Black Holes – a region of space having a gravitational field so intense that no matter or radiation can escape. Despite the dangers, a few cultures hold competitions to see how close to a black hole or another singularity they can get, without being dragged across the event horizon. One such ship named the Singularity Rider by its makers was made by what amounts to a group of students from various cultures and races, including Terrans, working at a university.

Their challenge was simple...

A Chunk of Fantasy 2.09 – Eternus [Settlement]

A Chunk of Fantasy 2.09 – Eternus

“What the heck is a town doing in the middle of the desert? Where does it get its water?”
Sir Arthur Figgins, “Famous” Explorer on his 3rd expedition to map the interior of Slalal Desert

Just over 300 years ago, the Slalal Desert didn’t exist. Where it stood was an area of high fertility and grassland. It was out of the way, for the most part, and there were very few settlements in the area. Eternus was once such settlement. Founded on top of a deep spring, the settlement was given the name of Eternus, named after what was believed to be a god of the same name, who’s power was meant to be eternal and everlasting, the hope is that their name and the spring would allow the settlement to last for eternity.

Sadly, this was not to be...

A Chunk of SciFi – 2.08 EngTech Body Spray

“Yes to us that smells weird and musky, but to them, it’s the sweetest aroma…now freshen up, they’ll be here soon”
Moments before the signing of a peace treaty

[No image with this post as I couldn’t find one I liked and could use without it looking like an advert for body sprays]

When humanity first stepped into the galactic stage, there were concerns. What about diseases, culture shock or being outclassed in many technological fields. These were expected and prepared for. What was not prepared for was the assault on our olfactory sense – or, to put it another way…the smell. Every species had their own aroma, from what appears to us to be lilac and vanilla for one, with another species, although incredibly friendly, smelt like rancid meat...
