According to wikipedia, Archaeology, or archeology, is the study of human activity through the recovery and analysis of material culture. The archaeological record consists of artifacts, architecture, biofacts or ecofacts, and cultural landscapes. This can be applied to a fictional world as well. Items and dsicveries from ancient times can lead to clues to help defeat the Big Evil, or give clues to the founding of the Holy Empire or much more. It can even be a curiosity. Of course on worlds with a high magic content it might be easier to find these relics of history, or even to use it to hide them.
