Activating magical items

Magic items are a staple of any fantasy genre game or story, plus others genres as well. From the humble potion, to the mighty god-slaying sword. But something that crops up time and time again is how to actually use the item you have found. Some, like potions, are obvious; open bottle and drink. But what about others? Today, I’ll be suggesting some other ways magic items can be activated or even deactivated, which is useful for cursed items or those that give off a signature that can be tracked or followed.

Magic has existed for quite a while in Easthalen, but before the barrier was erected it was seen, at best as a fun tool and at worst as a dangerous power to be messing around with. Artefacts with an arcane origin where few and far between.

This changed quite dramatically after the population became trapped behind the Great Barrier. The first few years after the GB was raised saw a flood of magical items and artefacts into the world, as new-found magic-users experimented. Easthalen #7 – Arcane Protectors

It has been mentioned before that magic in Easthalen is dangerous. All can use it, but only a few know how to suppress the side effects when casting. These are the wizards and sorcerers of the world. But sometimes others find themselves in situations where they need to use the ambient magic in an emergency or they simply don’t care. The side effects , although centered on the “caster” can sometimes be very destructive and resistant to standard methods of control – Fires ignore water poured on them, acid burns longer and harder etc.

Now in a world like Easthalen, magic is a very real and powerful force used by a chosen few. Why don’t more people use it you ask?

The main number #1 reason why more people don’t use it is a bit of a paradox. In Easthalen, EVERYONE, can use magic. Well, every adult at least.
