Resource – Ambient Mixer

This weeks resource is another website dedicated to background or ambient sounds, called Ambient Mixer.

So, what can you expect when you visit the site? I’ll let the site blurb speak for itself – “Ambient-mixer.com is a community driven project offering you some unique quality soundscapes with different atmospheres for chilling, relaxing or your recordings using our endless audio loops. You can further effectively mix and create your own sounds absolutely free, with no software installations required. You can begin listening to our sounds by clicking on the images above, which are based on different themes. All atmospheres are royalty free audio files and you can use them even in your commercial projects, thanks to the Creative Commons Sampling Plus license.

Each one of these themes have...

Resource – RPG Tinker

This week’s rpg related resource is a website for helping you make characters in 5e, RPG Tinker. It is very easy to use, with drop-down menus and stat options. Simply select what you want and hit the “build that NPC” button. There are pre-set options in the bestiary, for various types of npcs or humanoid creatures you may encounter, such as city guard, or goblins.  To quote the site – ”

Hello folks! RPGTinker is a tool for building NPCs for D&D 5e. Just choose a template, abilities scores, and hit dice, and your NPC is ready to use in battle! You can even print or pdf it!

In 5E, monsters -and especially NPCs- follow different rules to players. They are usually a “damage sponge”, having a lot of hit points and low damage. I haven’t found any other generator for NPCs, just for players...

OrcPub Resource Shut down

Last week the resource I had listed, OrcPub, which is a site for making characters for 5e is/has been shut down by WoTC.  To quote ENWorld user Rellott “In a comment on the update he says that he is doing it for legal reasons that, for legal reasons, he would rather not disclose. The assumed cause is that WotC sent him a cease and desist order. This makes sense given the recent opening of D&D Beyond and its character building functions. “. It is because of this that, for now, I have removed OrcPub from the resource section. I have kept the section there for now in case anything else turns up to fill the spot.

I can’t say for sure why the site was shut down but it does raise an important issue, that of copyright/IP in the industry and as a whole...

Resource – Fantasy Name Generators website

As many a player of RPGs knows, the creation of a character, both for NPCs and regular pcs can be a difficult one. For many, myself included, the name can be the hardest part.

Fantasy Name Generators is one place you can go to help with that issue. There are over 1000 generators on the site spread across several broad catagories

  • Fantasy Names
  • Real Names
  • Place Names
  • Pop Culture
  • Description
  • Other

I won’t go through all of them, as there are so many to list – There is a handy “Random Generator” option to take you , as the name suggests, a random page. I clicked on it and got “Stage Name.”

Each generator has a little bit of an explanation about it. Some of them, like the names, have two options for a refresh, such as giving you female names on one and male names on another button.

The site ...

Resource – Magic Set Editor

This weeks resource highlight is the very useful “Magic Set Editor” or MSE for short.

MSE is, in their words, a program with which you can design your own cards for popular trading card games. MSE can then generate images of those cards that you can print or upload to the internet. Magic Set Editor also has a statistics window that will give useful information about your set, like the average mana cost, number of rares, etc. When you have finished your set, you can export it to an HTML file to use on the Internet, or to Apprentice or CCG Lackey so you can play with your cards online.

• Easily create your own cards for Magic: the Gathering, VS System, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and other games
• Create realistic looking images of your cards
• Analyze your set and find ways to improve it
• Play with ...
