Aliens & Asteroids: Sci-fi Horror Roleplaying Kickstarter

Today, I’m going to be talking about a Kickstarter called “Aliens & Asteroids“. I have known Brian “Fitz” Fitzpatrick, who is the main person in charge of this Kickstarter for a few years now.  One of his previous works , Mazes & Perils (an OSR game), did quite well for sales and has reached Silver status on DrivethruRPG. Fitz is, in his own words – “…the main force behind Moebius Adventures, carrying on a legacy born when the company began in the 1990s. He’s been keeping ideas alive, exploring the use of random tables, and enjoying creating adventures and extras for Mazes & Perils in the last couple of years. Now he’s taking on the galaxy with Aliens & Asteroids!”

A short disclaimer – I’m involved with one of the stretch goals for this project...

Starship Types – Military Vessels

Military ships are the most varied. They make up the backbone of any respectable star navy. The potency and reliability though can vary from group to group and even from ship to ship within the same class. This list below does not feature every possible starship type, but does include most /classes.

  • Assault – Heavy armoured damage dealer
  • Battleship – Large, slow with superior firepower
  • Blockade Runner – Fast and nimble
  • Bomber – Drops heavy payloads on the target
  • Barrier – Help with blockades or protecting other ships
  • Carrier – A large vessel designed to carrier fighters etc
  • Combat Rep/Medic – AKA the field hospital
  • Command – The ship the commander of the fleet uses
  • Communications – As the name suggests, a starship built with communication, long range and short in mind
  • Covert Ops – Stealt...

Planned Sci-Fi products

Don’t really have an article ready for today, so instead have a list of some of the planned sci-fi themed products I have on my ever-growing to-do list. Just be aware there is no confirmed date for any of these and they are in no particular order, with the exception of the first three, which are either already done, or in the design stage.

  • Star System/Planet Maker – An update of the Multiverse Kit
  • Planet Name Maker – Designed for making planet names (obviously) – but can be used to make star/system names
  • Lifeform Maker – For creating alien species. These are not necessarily sentient species but can be used as the basis of one
  • Culture Generator – You have a species but now want them to be uplifted to sentience and into the void – Whilst this one will be stand-alone, it will be a perfect ...

Foods and drinks in Sci-Fi

Food and drinks in Sci-Fi

This morning, my toaster started messing about and not working properly, only cooking one side when it used to do both. This got me thinking about how food, and drinks, are handled in the science fiction genre. A few sprung to mind right away and I’ve listed them below. This is by no means all of them, just the ones I can remember off the top of my head.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

This features possibly the best-named drink ever – The Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster .  “The best drink in existence is the Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster. The effect of drinking one of these is rather like having your brains smashed out with a slice of lemon, wrapped around a large gold brick...

Five types of FTL systems

With sci-fi games apparently having a resurgence lately I thought I’d cover some of the types of FTL system you might end up using in your chronicles. This is not a list of all of the types of faster-than-light (FTL) systems out there, just the ones I know and are at least a tiny bit familiar with. This also assumes you have a game that requires the use of an  FTL system in the first place as not every setting needs or justifies one. Lastly, whilst I won’t be naming where the systems come from, see if you can figure out where they originated from, some will be easier than others.

  1. Tachyon Drive – A tachyon is a particle that, theoretically, travels faster than light. Tachyons have the strange properties that, when they lose energy, they gain speed...
