According to Wikipedia, “A government is the system or group of people governing an organized community, generally a state “. They can serve a purpose by performing many tasks needed for a society to, at least in theory, function well. In reality, this is not always the case. Some groups and cultures can have different views on what is “optimum”.

As with other world-building prompts, these questions are designed to be genre-free, but keep in mind that the setting can often play an important role in setting up how the government (or other designated ruler) functions.

  1. What services are the government in charge of?
  2. How many individuals make up the government?
  3. How many political parties are there if any?
  4. What group has oversight, if any, on the government?
  5. What is the process for making, altering, or removing laws?
  6. Are offices in the government hereditary, elected, or appointed?
  7. How are those who serve in government office chosen?
  8. What individuals are forbidden from serving?
  9. What is the structure of the government?
  10. What protocols are in place, if any, to deal with the sudden “departure” of members?

Bonus question – How is corruption/subversion of the laws by the lawmakers handled?
