Young Explorers
Many countries have some kind of organisation that supports young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development, that they may play constructive roles in society, with a strong focus on the outdoors and survival skills. They may be called Scouts, Eagles or something else that suggests the great outdoors.
The Young Explorers is such an organisation. They are less about the spiritual development that other groups promote and more about expanding your skills, self and respecting nature.
They regularly go on expeditions to semi-wild areas, often with a goal in mind, such as setting up a wildlife life preserve or teaching survival skills for that environment. They treat boys and girls the same, as the only requirements to join is a willing to learn and be taught. Sexism and other such behaviors are not allowed with boys and girls having the same tasks, although there is a slight advantage for some in some areas.
They have several branches for various ages, starting at 5 years old. Officially, once you turn 18 you are no longer allowed to be in the Young Explorers, but they have a sub-set of the organisation called, imaginatively, the Adult Explorers, for those who are adults but still wish to take part in the group. They pass their skills and knowledge down to others. Many employers view those who work in the Adult Explorers quite favorably, especially when it comes to leadership roles.
Like many a scouting organisation, they have a reward merit-based system for showing off the skills learned. These are called medals in the YE. Each has a grading system ranging from bronze, when you first get the basics of the skill or teaching, up to Platinum for when you are considered a master of the skill to such an extent that you could, in theory, teach it in the real world. Most medals are handed out regular as the YE earns them, but the Platinum ones are only awarded on an annual event which celebrates the achievements of both the YE as a group and those within who have earned the top medals. It is a major celebration that all YE and their friends and family are invited to, with music and demonstrations of skills and abilities
Hooks & Rumours
- Some believe that having both boys and girls in the same group is a distraction, whilst other believe it helps to foster understanding between the sexes as each is treated equally.
- A troop of YE has gone missing nearby, despite being led by one of the organisations top leaders. They have been missing for almost 24 hours.
- A leader of the AE is about to retire and the YE are going to be holding a surprise party for her.
- The last batch of platinum medals has gone missing and needs to be found within 3 days for the next annual awards and party.
- For the first time in 45 years, the YE has only 1 platinum medal winner. Rumors are suggesting this person family has bribed and/or blackmailed the judges.
