Campaign Chunk Volume 12.07 – Great White Shark
The Great White Shark (Scientific name: Carcharodon carcharias) is one of the ocean’s most famous and deadly apex predators. Few creatures strike more fear in humans than this creature, despite attacks against humans being relatively rare. Measuring in at a typical 4.5 meters long, with some individuals sharks being recorded as close to 6 meters from nose to tail, combined with its efficiency as a predator, then you can understand where this fear comes from.
The Great White Shark (GWS) are a blue-grey on the top/dorsal part of their body , with the bottom, or ventral part being white, which is what gives them their name. They can be found throughout the world’s oceans, mostly in cool waters close to the coast. Thier famously powerful jaws and 300 sharp triangular teeth make it easy for them to kill or seriously hurt their target.
The GWS is an example of sexual dimorphism as the females are generally larger and more deadly when compared to the males. When they reproduce, the GWS normally has a gestation period of between 12 and 18 months, with the exact timeframe is not known 100%. Many aspects of the GWS are unknown or vary, such as reports of their maximum age varying from 30 to 70 years, depending on various sources. The GWS has not been spotted giving birth, so it is unknown how many “pups” are in a litter
The GWS only natural enemies, apart from humans, are larger sharks and Orcas. This is due in part to their fast speed, of which they can sometimes reach something close to 60 kmph.
Hooks & Rumours
- There are reports around the coast of Cornwall in the UK, that a GWS has been spotted going close to 100 kph. This was originally believed to be nothing more than a prank or hoax until, whilst filming a surfing documentary, a shark was spotted going much faster than normal. Now the hunt is on to find this shark to track and study it.
- In an effort to find out more about the GWS breeding methods and birth, a group of biologists and a wealthy donator have put up a reward for the live capture and safe return of two GWS, one being male the other female of course. This has caused quite a stir around the world, but the money being offered is extremely large. A very vocal group has condemned this offer as being dangerous for the shark and foolhardy for anyone willing to take up the offer.
- Declared Vulnerable by the Australian Government in 1999 because of significant population decline, there has been a marked increase in GWS population in all other areas. An investigation into this phenomena is underway – Just why is the Australian GWS population in sharp decline when compared to rest of the world.
- Despite attacks on humans being rare, films and now a popular TV show about shark attack are making people afraid to go in the water in certain areas. A private group is requesting help in making a documentary that show the sharks in a good light.
