A line drawing of a startled looking person, holding a torch or wand that has just exploded - Done by Silverglass/Sophie Sophie Grunnet

For most fantasy based stories and games, magic is one of the genre’s hallmarks. Even a certain series about taking a bit of jewellery to be destroyed has magic, even though it’s not used often.

These prompts/questions give you ten things to consider when making a magic item. You don’t have to use all of them every time you make a magic item, and hey, if you get stuck I’m sure you could find someone who has products that might help with that *cough* 😉

Some may seem obvious questions/prompts, but often, and I include myself in this, I find that the “obvious” questions are the ones that get missed often, because they are obvious…then you forget to do them….doh!

  1. What is the name of the item?
  2. What type of object is it?
  3. Who made it?
  4. Why was it made/purpose?
  5. What is it made from?
  6. What does it look like?
  7. What does it do, and what powers does it have?
  8. How can it be destroyed?
  9. Does it have any legendary stories attached to it?
  10. Where is the item currently?

Bonus prompt: Who was the most (in)famous user of the item and what did they do with it?
