According to wikipedia, Torture (from the Latin tortus, “twisted”) is the act of deliberately inflicting physical or psychological pain on an organism in order to fulfill some desire of the torturer or compel some action from the victim. In many a so-called modern society, it is considered to be barbaric, yet is still practiced by many nations to get information they want or need or simply to as a show of power.
Be warned that if you decide to look up some of these methods, the images can be disturbing.
The question remains, why would you want something like this in your story and games? It could show off how corrupted an organization or individual is. It could be used o your characters to make them suffer. It could even be used as a race against time scenario where the person you are trying to rescue is being tortured and you must find and liberate the before they succumb or die.
